First of all, I was never a fan of Floyd Mayweather to begin with. My reasons are not worth mentioning, but this is just pathetic. Through ignorance and probably a good amount of racism, Mayweather claims that the only reason for the Lin hype is his nationality. He also notes that black players do the same thing every night and do not get the same praise. Really? So when Kevin Durant scores 35, nobody praises him? When Kobe wins championships, nobody praises him? I beg to differ. But in term’s of Lin,there’s no way you can say it’s because he is asian. Yes, it adds to his terrific story, but so does his Harvard degree, his sleeping on his brother’s couch, the precious timing; Oh, and what about the fact that he has led his team to win 5 straight, scored the most points in his first 4 starts EVER (109), and put up 38 on a still highly competitive Lakers team. Honestly, this statement is wrong in so many ways, and if the media bashes him relentlessly for it, I will be pleased.
Tweet of the Day: Floyd Mayweather
Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise.

They are allowing him to tweet from jail?
Why are you even giving this women beater the time in your column?

I think everyone misses the point here. Its not talked about much if at all, but I honestly believe Lin was overlooked throughout his college and pro career specifically because he was Asian. Its the only logical explanation for why he was overlooked coming out of high school. Stanford was in his own backyard! The story is now hyped because 1. He was undrafted bounced around 2 teams, cut twice, went to the D-league and went to Harvard, 2. This is happening in NYC, 3. He’s Asian making the story a little more unique. If he were black and had a similar story the hype would still be there, it wouldn’t be quite as unique and definitely not global. Ironically its Lin being Asian that probably caused him to be overlooked in the first place. Sorry Floyd this story isn’t happening every day in NBA. As a Knicks fan the closest story I know of is John Starks and he didn’t set a scoring record in his first 4 starts like Lin and there is no one from that era more beloved by Knicks fans.

The Asian fanbase that he has is the only group that I think truly cares more about his race than anything. As a NYer I love the guy’s story because he came out of nowhere and has made my team enjoyable again, and he has done it without any players of significance. It’s an underdog story in the biggest media market. If a guy from Marist was the main reason the Knicks turn around and set a scoring record for starts in his first 4 games without the only 2 offensive stars on the team it would be a major story and to say otherwise is ignoring how much the NY media has influence. Also no one else does this every night. Rondo was a 1st rd pick out of Kentucky and playing with KG, Pierce and Allen. Every other star has some type of pedigree that doesn’t apply here. Not to mention it is not like he is being said to be better than players like Rondo

Completely true. Does t make Floyd a racist for pointing out something the mainstream media ignores for fears of being attacked. Fact of the matter is if Jeremy Lin was doing this as an unheralded African American player from say, Marist, yes it woul be a story for the NBA fan, but no way in hell would it be the global phenomenon it has become. There is nothing wrong with saying as much.

obviously being asian makes a big part of the hype. i would say about 40 percent of it, 40 percent because its new york and 20 percent because of his story.
i’m not even convinced about his long-term qualities, he has yet to prove that he is starter material. he is not the first one coming out of d-league or being undrafted making some big games…

What a disgrace. Truly ignorant man who actually believes he is supporting black athletes. Lebron said it best: “this league doesn’t judge race, it judges your ability to play basketball”. I think that was it.
