Philadelphia 76ers center Andrew Bynum is out indefinitely. There is no timetable for his return.
Sixers general manager Tony DiLeo provided the grim news before Saturday’s home game vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“There are no timelines,” DiLeo said. “We just have to wait and see how he reacts.”
DiLeo said Bynum’s knees have worsened since the Sixers traded for him in August as part of the four-team, 12-player blockbuster that sent Dwight Howard from Orlando to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Earlier this month, he revealed that he had a setback, suffering a bone bruise in his left knee while bowling.
The Sixers are over a barrel with Bynum, who becomes a free agent this summer. It will be next to impossible to trade him before the mid-February deadline and his knees may not be fully healed when they have to make a decision whether to re-sign him to a long-term deal.
Even with his injuries, Bynum is expected by many to command a maximum contract in free agency. He has missed 130 games over the last five seasons, almost exclusively due to knee injuries.
