For the fourth consecutive season, the UNLV Rebels are going to the NCAA Tournament. They finished the 2012-13 regular season at 25-9 and were granted with a No. 5 seed.
So what do you need to know about UNLV?
1. If there is anything you need to know about UNLV, it’s that they move the ball well and crash the boards hard. They’re sixth in the nation in rebounding and ninth in assists. Point guard Anthony Marshall (5.8 assists) and power forward Anthony Bennett (8.0 rebounds) are major reasons why.
2. The Rebels have a potential No. 1 overall draft choice in Anthony Bennett. The freshman big man is currently averaging 16.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks on a slash line of .538/.379/.701. Most importantly, he’s battle-tested against major conference opponents.
3. UNLV is not necessarily an elite defensive team, as they rank rank 83rd in opponent points per game. With that being said, they’re an athletic team that limits opponents to 38.8 percent shooting from the floor. Despite being made up of more athletes than elite defenders, they’re also eighth in blocks.
4. UNLV hasn’t made it to the Sweet Sixteen since 2007. In that time, they’ve made four NCAA Tournament appearances and made three Round fo 64 exits. Will 2013 be any different?
5. The Rebels own victories over five NCAA Tournament participants. That includes New Mexico, Iowa State, California, San Diego State and Colorado State.
