There is old school, and then there is dinosaur school. And when it comes to collecting classic cars, it appears George Hill is more of a dinosaur than his former teammate, Tim Duncan.

Not many people know it, because Duncan doesn’t talk about it a lot. But I know a few things about Duncan, having covered him since he declared for the NBA draft (it was held in Charlotte, and on media day Peter May, then of the Boston Globe, asked Duncan: “Is this actually painful for you?” as Duncan grimaced through the question-answering session.)
Duncan has always been a tough interview, but if the subject matter is interesting to him, he’ll be agreeable. And on a cold morning in 2009, I went to Madison Square Garden for a Spurs shootaround and put in a request for a chat with Tim about his classic car collection.
He agreed, immediately.
You will not find the piece I wrote in ESPN’s archives, because they have deleted most of my archived copy due to our acrimonious breakup. But the fine folks at Hemmings Motor News, who used to be my primary source of parts for a ’66 Dodge Dart, picked up the story and bookmarked it, saving it for all eternity.
Here is the link, and below are photos of Duncan’s five favorite cars from his personal collection (absent anything he has added in the years since).
No. 5: 1966 Pontiac GTO (as noted in the original article, Duncan was actually looking to purchase one of these. One of my readers e-mailed me that he had one for sale, I passed the info along to Tim. I do not know what happened after that.)
Sweet, eh?
