Featuring picks and comments by Rob Dudek
All available Sunday baseball leagues start at 1:05 Eastern. There may be some 4:05 leagues added later, but those would be limited to just five of the 15 MLB games. If you want to be in action this afternoon, start making your picks ASAP.
Another consideration is the tendency of many managers to give their regulars a day of rest on Sunday. It’s not enough to pick the best players, they need to be on the field. Last week’s unexpected healthy scratch of Troy Tulowitzki (the best SS on the board) ruined a few teams. I’ve plugged Baseball Press here several times; they are usually first and almost always accurate with starting lineups.
It’s free to join DraftStreet and you can start by joining free leagues. Once you’re ready to win cash, make a deposit — use the code SHHOOP to get a 30% bonus — and choose your level of play, from $2 entry fees up to $420. Good luck!
Best Bets (Pitchers)
The conservative play is Gio Gonzalez ($15,843) who Rob calls “the best pitcher going today, even at a steep price against a tough Atlanta lineup.”
If you don’t mind a bit of risk for a potential high reward, Brandon Morrow ($10,645) is your man. “If he has his command and his strikeout pitch, could be the highest value pitching play of the day. There is the chance of a blowup, but I like him a lot at this price.”
Normally we don’t expect a pitcher’s duel in Fenway Park, but Clay Buchholz ($13,201) has been outstanding in both his starts and the Rays counter with Alex Cobb ($10,411), a Boston native who was 2-0 there last year with a 1.80 ERA. Take your pick.
Best Bets (Hitters)
Kevin Youkilis ($9,828) is “…worth the high price. He faces a lefty and had been hitting up a storm prior to last night’s 0-fer.”
Dudek has also been impressed by Alex Rios this year. “The knock has always been that he hasn’t fully utilized his talents. At times in his career he has appeared distracted and “mailed in” many at-bats. This year, Rios looks locked in and could be worth the $11,471 sticker price today.”
We liked Joey Votto ($10,093) last night even against a lefty but those cowardly Pirates walked him three times. Minor-league righty Phil Irwin has been called up for a spot start today, and if he dares to throw a fastball strike, Votto might bounce it off the Roberto Clemente Bridge into the river.
