Can a fan sue an athlete for not being able to play due to an injury?
In a word, yes.
People these days can apparently sue others for a myriad of reasons – logical or not – and one 25-year-old Chicago Bulls fan named Matthew Thompson decided he has a case against point guard Derrick Rose. Here are some details, from Tony Andracki of CSN Chicago:
The former NBA MVP is a homegrown kid who has never wavered in his humility, even as he morphed into a worldwide superstar. He tore his ACL in the first game of last year’s playoff series with the Sixers, dashing any hopes of a potential championship run. And now this year, he didn’t suit up once during the regular season.
But one fan took his disappointment to a whole other level.
Matthew Thompson, a 25-year-old native of Peoria, Ill., has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Rose.
Seriously.
Thompson, an electrician, claims Rose’s season-long absence has caused him to have mental breakdowns and emotional distress, leading to obesity issues.
Thompson went so far as to say Rose’s behavior was negligent, as he was cleared by doctors but refused to return to game action.
This story makes you wonder why the court/lawyers don’t have a standard for what should or should not make it to court as a case. Quite frankly, the whole thing isn’t even worth evaluating. Put this under the list of dumb things you wish you didn’t even hear about. Unfortunately for us, news involving NBA players – relevant or not – will always go noticed.
Here’s what Golden State Warriors center Andrew Bogut had to say about the matter, and he wasn’t very pleased about it:
Appropriate reaction, Mr. Bogut.
