Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard Tony Allen should earn some kind of an award for perhaps the best acting-job of the season during the final moments of the fourth quarter in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
He should probably expect a fine from the league as well.
Down by as much as 18 points against the San Antonio Spurs, the Grizzlies somehow clawed back into what appeared to be a hopeless game and trimmed the Spurs lead to just four points with less than a minute to go. Allen then had a breakaway layup on a Zach Randolph steal, but Manu Ginobili was there to pull him down by the arm while in midair. Allen managed to break his fall, but realized he had the opportunity to sell a call for a possible flagrant foul, so he did just that:
It was a good gamble by Allen to act on the play because the league doesn’t penalize you during the game for flopping or faking an injury. The Grizzlies got the call for a Flagrant 1, Allen knocked down the free throws, and managed to help send the game to overtime with the extra possession.
What’s surprising is the decision by the referees to leave it as a Flagrant 1 after seeing the replays. It was a hard foul by Ginobili to prevent the layup, but it’s hardly more than just a playoff foul to make Allen earn his points from the line. It seemed to be a very subjective call, and Allen’s flop-job certainly played a role in the referees’ decision to call it a Flagrant 1 in the first place. I guess the lesson here is to do all you can to sell a call when your playoff lives are on the line.
Tweet of the Day: This just in, Kevin Durant…Still nice

My bad. Since my kindle ‘spellchecked’ me, I am a troll, huh? U can be a fan w/o having to only take the side of your team. I threw in the Bowen joke b/c anybody who’s been watching KNOWS about him. Notorious ankle-breaker with the occasional kick to the face. Don’ t be so soccer mom-ish.

Would it be possible for SheridanHoops.com to get someone writing about flops to actually learn the definition?
To believe it is a flop by NBA rules, you have to believe that no foul would have been called.
From NBA: “Flopping” will be defined as any physical act that appears to have been intended to cause the referees to call a foul on another player.
Being overly dramatic is not the same as a flop.
James Park says
Flop is also just a general term used in the league for over-exaggerating on contacts as well as non-contact plays. I’m certainly not the only one to refer to what Allen did as a “flop”.
Trey says
Almost expect Allen to get a specal award FOY (faker of the year) for this and a bonus for the NBA. the 2 to 1 ratio of FT’s for the visiting team sure was helpful. But the reffing was “bad” both ways just more so for one team then the other.,,,.. connly miss call gets a lot of play on es*n but some how the 3rd foul when connly grabbed tim and tim go called for it does no.. amazing that.
Parker says
It was about an obvious a moving screen as there is…haha Duncan moves on 75% of his screens anyway, just never gets called.

Fan or no fan allen&the referees need to be fined, first to the referees NOT reviewing the play and excepting the play act and second to the player that did the great job of acting on selling the play which we all saw on replays FAKED and FLOPPED, MR STERN PLEASE REVIEW the part on where allen NEVER hit his head
Bob says
Not a flagrant
Dirty flopping
will says
yup that was a flagrant anyways cause Ginobili pulled him down. still it’d be awesome if the NBA suspended Tony Allen for a game – that play was disgraceful.
Eric says
I don’t know what game you were watching, it was a play that should have been called BOTH ways, and he did not even bring Allen down, that is how much of a baby Allen is he knew he was going to miss that shot and cried wolf!! it was a hard foul not a flagarant
Arky says
1. The refs would have called it a flagrant on the floor anyway so they could review it. They ALWAYS do that, especially in the last minute of the 4th quarter in such a critical situation.
2. They obviously thought it was flagrant after seeing the replay, probably because he was pulled down (and not just hit) while in the air. That’s consistent with past calls.
Tony Allan’s theatrics didn’t change that because they could see clear as day he wasn’t hit in the head and that’s not why it was called flagrant. So he didn’t actually gain anything by flopping, except scorn and a guarantee that the officials will look more closely at him next game when he acts like he’s been hit. It didn’t change the call, though.
Ottomattik says
Spurs fan since Garvin. CLEAR flagrant. No play on ball whatsoever. And Bruce Bowen is dirty
Carl G says
Yeah, you obviously aren’t Spurs fan since GErvin. Go troll somewhere else, tool.
Jimmy John says
Ha! Some Spurs fan.
1) Bowen wasn’t dirty, he was just pesky and physical.
2) Who’s Garvin?
Eric says
And the Stupidest Award goes to Tony Allen for faking & putting on an act of pretending to hold his head as if pain (funny he shot the 2 shots just fine from the free throw line after the flagarant foul was called) when it never even touched the ground, where he really should be hurting is his hand that protected him from hitting his head on the floor, REPLAY after REPLAY I have no idea at what the REFS were looking at to make it a Flagarant1, must have not been the same video, because it clearly shows that Allen’s stupid head never even touched the ground. Refes you should be fine and embarrassed it was a hard foul yes, but the same call that should be called both ways, people EVERYWHERE saw where ALLEN took the opportunity and played it , and you have the nerve to call yourself professional NBA referees what you did was bought his play and all it did was make NBA REFES look like morons for believing his acting, Maybe the league needs to look into every incorrect call/play that is made by both the referee and the player and have a penalty/fine come off not just the NBA players but these REFS themselves included for making a false call and maybe what the NBA need is an extra REF two on each side of the court, because it’s obvious 3 don’t do a damn thing but only assume..
Eric says
and let’s the forget the shove/push Allen did to Manu when he got the ball from him, why wasn’t a call made there, no after Allen was going for the shot and Manu touched his hand and Allen missed the shot he grabbed his head as if pretending to be in pain when clearly he was holding he head of being upset of missing that shot. I say fine both Tony Allen and these 3 so called NBA REFS.
