The “old” trio of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili just don’t seem to know when to quit.
With a surprising sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference Finals on Monday, the San Antonio Spurs will head to the NBA Finals for the first time since the 2006-2007 season, when they swept LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
LeBron, of course, is also half way there to his third-consecutive trip to the Finals. The Heat are up 2-1 against the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. That series is hardly over, as the games have gone down to the wire with the exception of Game 3, when Udonis Haslem’s jump shot was somehow resurrected after taking a leave of absence for some years.
The fact that the Heat-Pacers series is still long from over didn’t stop Phoenix Suns guard Jared Dudley from expecting to see a Heat-Spurs series in the Finals:
Well that’s not very nice, if you’re a fan of the Pacers.
It’s not an unreasonable prediction (low-key style), and the story line of the Spurs trio going up against the Heat’s trio certainly has great intrigue (David Stern is probably begging for it), but it’s simply too soon to be writing off a gritty Pacers team in the midst of an intense series. If Indiana can make proper adjustments to take Game 4, we’re looking at an “anything is possible” scenario. It will be interesting to see what Dudley will have to say if that happens.
