Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As the playoffs continue, we’ll keep you updated every evening. What’s happening today?
Here’s the latest from around the league:
Timberwolves dangling Derrick Williams in effort to move up in draft
According to Charley Walters of Twincities.com, the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to move up in the draft and are trying to package Derrick Williams along with their ninth overall pick in a trade in order to do so.
Williams, 22, has had games where he’s looked worthy of being the second overall selection from the 2011 draft. However, for the most part, Williams has disappointed in his two years with the team.
Moreover, with Kevin Love and Andrei Kirilenko ahead of Williams on the team’s depth chart, Minnesota considers the 22-year-old to be expendable for the right price.
The Timberwolves are highly interested in picking up a young shooting guard and have made Victor Oladipo their top target. Unfortunately for the team, Oladipo projects to be taken long before the Wolves choose ninth.
Williams will be on book for just over $5 million next season and will have a team option for nearly $7 million in 2014-2015.
While he is 6’8″ and did shoot 43% from three last season, Williams’ lack of court sense (0.6 assists) for a small forward and subpar rebounding (5.5 rebounds) for a power forward seem to be preventing him from becoming a quality starter.
Jerry Sloan discusses return to Jazz
Jody Genessy of Deseret News reports that the Utah Jazz have had preliminary talks with Jerry Sloan about a possible return to the team in an unspecified role.
Sloan has been interested in coming back to the NBA for several months and was linked to the Bucks’ head coaching vacancy last month before he eventually removed himself from consideration.
When asked about a return to the Jazz, Sloan was straight to the point.
“That’s up to [them]. That’s a situation that’s strictly up to Ty [Corbin] or somebody in the Jazz organization,” Sloan told the Deseret News. “If they want me around, fine. If they don’t, [fine]. They had talked to me a little bit about it a little bit earlier.”
Sloan did not say whether a formal offer had been made or what position he would be interested in coming back to. One thing Sloan did make clear in the interview was that he did not want to be a distraction to the team.
“I’d hate to be in anybody’s way,” Sloan said.
Sloan still lives in Utah and attended most of the Jazz’s home games last season.
Sloan’s former players, Jeff Hornacek and Karl Malone, have recently accepted coaching positions in the league. Hornacek will be the Suns’ head coach while Malone will tutor the Jazz’s big men in a part time role.
Nets request permission to speak with Lionel Hollins
Less than 24 hours after Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Memphis Grizzlies and Lionel Hollins had “major philosophical differences” stalling a contract extension, ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that the Brooklyn Nets have formally requested permission to speak with Hollins.
Hollins has received permission from the Grizzlies to speak with other teams and multiple sources close to Memphis’ negotiations believe that Hollins has coached his last game with the team.
The Nets have made Hollins a top target in their coaching search and are looking to hire a coach with playoff leadership experience.
Hollins has led Memphis to three consecutive playoff appearances.
