Flopping has been one of the most egregious problems ailing the NBA for years—from Vlade Divac taking dives against Shaq to Dwyane Wade falling untouched out of bounds.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has always been outspoken about his dislike of flopping, and now he appears to be putting his money where it counts—in research.
Cuban, through his company Radical Hoops, Ltd. awarded a research grant of $100,000 to biomechanics experts at Souther Methodist University to investigate the forces involved in typical basketball collisions.
SMU biomechanics expert Peter G. Weyand had this to say about the research:
The issues of collisional forces, balance and control in these types of athletic settings are largely uninvestigated. There has been a lot of research into balance and falls in the elderly, but relatively little on active adults and athletes.”
Needless to say, the league could definitely benefit from any external research and development in detecting flops, because their efforts to crack down on the epidemic have, shall we say, flopped.
