In a surprising result, Paul was elected president of the NBA Players Association on Wednesday. He becomes the first superstar to lead the union since Patrick Ewing in 2001.
And his job is not going to be easy.
The first order of business for the union is to hire an executive director to replace the departed Billy Hunter amidst a scandal being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department involving charges of nepotism and abuse of power. Names in the mix as Hunter’s possible replacement include Stu Jackson, Isiah Thomas, Steve Mills and others.
As Paul described it, it is a “rebuild.”
“Right now is a big time for us as players and as a union moving forward,” Paul said. “I have a lot of experience having been around the union, but moving forward it’s not about me as president or the first vice president, it’s about the players as a whole, as a body.
