In today’s news, the Knicks are encouraged by what they’ve seen from Carmelo Anthony and Andrea Bargnani so far, George Karl is itching for another coaching opportunity, and Vladimir Radmonivic has officially retired from the NBA.
Melo and Bargnani working well together
Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com reports the Knicks have been impressed with the chemistry Carmelo Anthony and Andrea Bargnani have shown on the court together so far in training camp.
“It’s looking good,” Coach Mike Woodson said on Sunday. “I don’t know who’s going to start yet. But I like the makeup of Andrea and Melo on the floor at the same time with Tyson [Chandler]. In the scrimmage we worked that combination. It wasn’t bad.”
When Bargnani was acquired over the summer, many worried about how the stretch forward would work alongside Anthony — who played almost exclusively at power forward last season.
Regardless, Anthony has been encouraged by the progress that has been made in only seven practices together:
“Me and ‘B’ had a great week, just playing together, spacing it out on the court, me trying to learn from him, him trying to learn from me, trying to see what spots he likes out there on the basketball court,” Anthony said. “For the most part, he’s actually a smart player; he can play off people.”
While the offense between the two players shouldn’t be an issue, there is reason to be concerned about the defensive capabilities of an Anthony-Bargnani pairing. Still, Anthony isn’t concerned at all:
“Just put me out there, put us out there on the basketball court, whoever’s in the lineup we’ll adjust to each other, we’ll try to make it work and we’ll go from there,” he said.
George Karl wants another head coaching job
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the summer came out of Denver, where reigning Coach of the Year George Karl was fired with a year still left on his contract.
Karl, who is now serving as an analyst for ESPN, still believes he has a lot to offer an NBA team.
Karl told the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn that he is willing to listen if a team came calling about a head coaching vacancy:
“I still think I’m a gym rat and because of that, I want to coach,” Karl said. “There are so many things now in the world of basketball that have an interest to me that I’ve never had the time to pursue and put my heart into.
“I think everybody understands my passion for the game and this allows me to stay on top of the game and be a part of the game and hopefully to be an ambassador for coaches because the coaches are taking a lot of hits over the last couple of years.”
