The NBA, arguably better than any major sport, has made extreme efforts to become a global league. While it’s not reported on consistently in the media, both the NBA and the NFL have an eye on London as the hub of a new international team.
The UK isn’t the only international country that embraces basketball, though. Late Saturday morning the Golden State Warriors touched down in Beijing for exhibition games on Tuesday and Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
As noted on SFGate.com, this is about more than just two exhibition games. This is about growing the sport. And what better way than to bring the NBA’s most popular franchise, along with the up-and-coming Warriors to China?
After taking the San Antonio Spurs to six games in the Western semi’s last spring, along with the amazing on-court theatrics of Stephen Curry, the Warriors are as prime as any franchise to be the new face of the NBA.
Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes were treated like rock stars when they visited China this summer, and the entire team is about to witness the potential of the market. Many in the franchise believe that the Warriors are the natural gateway between the NBA and a growing fan base in China, and this trip will be the first step toward that goal.
Curry will be one of the young stars that the media will focus on this season, so why not start to expose him now?
Curry is a brilliant kid, who has poise on and off the court. He knows the importance of branding himself as well as helping to brand the league, and if his play continues to improve, the sky will be the limit.
@StephenCurry30 good luck to you and the warriors. Make it rain!
