Several experts at ESPN have weighed in on Bryant’s rank, with the majority of feedback saying he was ranked too low. However, ESPN Insider Amin Elhassan disagrees with the majority. “Considering Kobe’s age and the severity of his injury, 25th is very fair and might even be generous. At some point, we have to accept that 2006 Kobe ain’t walking through that door,” he said.
Looking at this objectively is very important, everyone must remember that ranking players is a guessing game. There’s no right or wrong answers until the players actually suit up. Since everyone gave their two cents, I’ll chime in on the controversial topic.
Bryant is a legend and will go down as one of the toughest competitors to ever play the game, but should his reputation impact the ranking? No. He almost dropped 20 spots from last season and fans are angry that Bryant isn’t higher simply because of his reputation. ESPN did the right thing by leaving past experiences out of the considerations. But, such a drastic drop needs to be justified and it’s not at this point. His Achilles injury is a nasty one that would sideline some guys eight months, but Bryant has been rehabilitation and is confident he’ll be back to full form. Last season he averaged over 27.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. Those numbers are among his career best. This rating is too fixated on the one problem at hand, the injury. He’s still an elite player and a phenomenal competitor. This ranking should mean nothing to him, he was robbed about 15 spots. When he’s ready, he’ll come back – smarter and hungrier – possibly more competitive than we’ve ever seen before.

If he and the Warriors worked something out, it would likely add three new years to his expiring deal, which will pay him $14 million in 2013-2014, reports Hoopsrumors.com.
