When in doubt, Hack-A-Dwight.
Dwight Howard’s free throw shooting down the stretch of close games this season is starting to become a serious issue for the Houston Rockets.
Of course, this is no surprise. Howard is a career 57.6 percent shooter from the stripe, but has shot below 50 percent over the past two seasons. He struggled once again against the Toronto Raptors on Monday, going four-of-12 from the line to drop to 47 percent on the season – staggeringly bad for someone who gets to the line over 10 times per game. In his last three games, Howard has gone 11-of-39 from the line, good for 28 percent.
It’s a major issue for Kevin McHale, who has to decide whether he’s going to stick with his center and live with the misses or bench him. So far, benching hasn’t been an option due to his presence on the defensive end. Against Toronto, Howard had a whopping 24 rebounds and five blocks. Still, if McHale doesn’t bench him, teams will continue to take their chances with Howard rather than dealing with Houston’s perimeter threats.
TNT analyst Reggie Miller agreed with the tactic:

If Howard continues to miss when it matters the most, the Rockets will continue to have to battle teams until the very end of the game the way they did with the Raptors, barely edging them 110-104 in double overtime. Houston may be talented enough to get away with it in the regular season, but it should present quite a dilemma when the playoffs come around.
