Believe it or not, a quarter of the NBA season has already come and gone. What have we learned so far through the first 20 games of the season?
Time flies, the Portland Trail Blazers are for real, critical injuries can derail any team, and the Eastern Conference may never have been worse.
After another impressive 111-104 home win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, the Blazers are a conference-best 16-3 – something no expert or fortune teller could have predicted coming into the season. They are easily one of the biggest surprises of the season, but it’s also worth noting that their schedule has been awfully friendly as well. Through their first 10 road games, only two of them – Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets – currently have a winning record. It’s something to keep in mind, as tough teams at home await their chance to see what these Blazers can do against better competition on the road. At home, they have had some impressive wins against Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls.
The New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, needless to say, have been the biggest surprises of the season. They were supposed to dominate the East. At the very least, they were supposed to be atop the Atlantic Division. It was supposed to be a rivalry of the best in New York.
Instead, both have missed key components of their respective rosters due to injuries. They are two of the top 5 worst teams in the entire league, and what was supposed to be an intriguing and anticipated match on TNT is now the joke of the town. Steve Kerr, who is supposed to call the game on Thursday, had this to say about them:
Love this Blazer team- can’t wait to see them in person next week on TNT.In the meantime I’m in NYC for Nets/Knicks tomorrow. Uh, yea….

At least he can bash them all night in person. That should be fun.
