Empathy – \ˈem-pə-thē\ – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
It is empathy that enables us to be emotionally moved to tears at the story of family that suffers loss or joy after hearing of someone else’s triumphant success. Empathy tugs at the proverbial heartstrings and helps us to feel for others.
Some people are more empathetic than others. Being one of them, might explain my disposition towards heartwarming or emotional stories for the Tweet of the Day.
Monday had another one, as NBA TV analyst Greg Anthony shared a gem from the Portland Trail Blazers.
Once Enemies, Now Brothers, heartwarming story! http://t.co/80kuySKCRG
— Greg Anthony (@GregAnthony50) December 16, 2013
The video is the story of former Portland Trail Blazers forward Brian Grant—a victim Parkinson’s disease, who has bonded with his one-time rival, Utah Jazz forward Karl Malone.
Malone and Grant were united for an two-day Alaskan fishing trip organized through a charity auction benefitting the Brian Grant Foundation.
This story is likely even more compelling for Anthony than many of us. He was Grant’s teammate in Portland for two seasons, from 1998 to 2000. He got to see some of their personal battles on the court up-close and in-person.
It’s truly encouraging to see two former rivals like Malone and Grant put their pride aside for the benefit of something bigger than themselves. It is even more encouraging to see that they have become friends.
Grant’s foundation, as mentioned in the video, helps those suffering from Parkinson’s disease to live active and fulfilling lives.
