Longtime popular Formula 1 race car driver Michael Schumacher is in critical condition with sever brain trauma from a fall sustained while skiing at the French Alpine resort of Meribel early Sunday morning.
Schumacher, who turns 45 on Friday, and his 14-year-old son were skiing a challenging section of trails with very wide and steep snowfields when he fell and struck the right side of his head on a rock.
While he was reported to have been conscious immediately following the fall, Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, the doctor in charge of the intensive care unit at the Grenoble hospital treating Schumacher, stated that he was not in a “normal state of consciousness.” His limbs were moving involuntarily and he was unresponsive to questions.
By the time he had arrived at the hospital, he had lost consciousness. At present, he is being kept in an artificial coma while doctors work to help him recover.
Schumacher has caring fans in a couple NBA athletes. Both Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol and Washington Wizards center Marcin Gortat have expressed their support via Twitter.
