Not unlike seasons of recent past, the Sacramento Kings are one of the worst teams in the league. Despite a career year from DeMarcus Cousins and despite a mid-season trade that brought in the topical Rudy Gay, the Kings are just 14-25 on the season – second worst in the Western Conference.
If there is one positive to take away from another season headed for the lottery (other than a lottery pick), it’s the breakout year that 5’9″ guard Isaiah Thomas is having. After averaging 13.9 points and 4 assists last season, Thomas has stepped up his game to another level and is averaging an impressive 19.5 points and 6.2 assists this season. Since being inserted into the starting lineup after the team traded away Greivis Vasquez, Thomas is averaging 21 points and 7.3 assists, qualifying him as one of the most productive point guards in the league.
It’s not translating into a whole lot of wins, however, which surely frustrates the ultra-competitive point guard. On Monday, he heard a post-game interview and had this to say:
He said it best… Buying in, playing FOR each other and making defense the most important thing on the floor
— Isaiah Thomas (@Isaiah_Thomas2) January 21, 2014
Those are standard things most athletes say after a victory or playing for a great team, so it’s natural for anyone to agree with such a statement. What’s interesting about Thomas’ decision to tweet the quote is the emphasis he put on the word “for” while pointing out the importance of playing for each other.
Perhaps it’s an insinuation that not everyone on his team plays with a team-oriented mindset, which wouldn’t be the most surprising thing in the world. You have Cousins, who for all of his talents, is still recognized as a problem child in the league. You also have Gay, who many in the blogosphere recognize at this point as a bit of a ball-hogging volume shooter (although he has been shooting extremely efficiently since joining the Kings for what it’s worth).
Of course, Thomas could simply be agreeing with a thought that makes a whole lot of sense and nothing more. It’s just worth noting that people usually don’t emphasize particular words unless they have a strong point to make, and he probably wishes/hopes that his talented team can eventually learn to play for each other on both ends of the floor.
