The Los Angeles Lakers have been short on bodies all season long due to an assortment of injuries to key players. In Wednesday’s 119-108 victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the shortage reached a new level.
Already without Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Pau Gasol, Jordan Hill, and Jodie Meeks, the Lakers also lost Nick Young (knee) and Jordan Farmar (leg) to injuries during the game, which left them with just six able bodies. Chris Kaman, however, was already fouled out of the game when Farmar went out with leg cramps, which actually left them with exactly five bodies.
Then came the king of all bizarre scenarios: Robert Sacre picked up his sixth foul, leaving Los Angeles with four able bodies. Luckily for them, there is a rule (and most of the Lakers weren’t even aware of this rule) that allows the last player to foul out to stay in the game if the team does not have anyone to replace that player. This allowed Sacre to remain in the game with one catch – any foul he picked up was going to be a technical foul.
Talk about something you don’t see every day.
As for the game itself, the outcome was decided early on, as the depleted Lakers got out to a 70-49 lead by half time. Cleveland showed little fight through most of the game, and key players like Kyrie Irving and Luol Deng never left the bench after the third quarter. Steve Blake, who played in just his second game since coming back from an elbow injury, carried the team with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists for his first triple-double in a Lakers’ uniform. Rookie Ryan Kelly also had a fantastic game with a career-high 26 points.
After the contest, players on the Lakers side had plenty to say about one of the weirdest games they have ever been a part of:

It’s the second triple double of his career. His first was against the Lakers as a Clipper.
