(Readers: This post originally ran April 18, shortly after I cast my NBA award ballot. It is relevant today because I was the only voter to put LeBron James on the Second Team, behind Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin.-CS)
Wow, you sure can catch a lot of grief when you tell folks you voted LeBron James to 2nd Team All-NBA. I put that word out on Twitter at midweek, and I have been fending off venom ever since.
Hey folks: Here’s the explanation. Try to read through it and watch the entire video before tweeting your disgust, OK?
Actually, I find the selection quite reasonable.
First of all, the All-NBA ballot must include a center, two forwards and two guards on each of the three All-NBA teams. Second, I voted Kevin Durant first and Blake Griffin second on my MVP ballot. And since both are forwards, there was no room at the inn for LeBron.
Hey, that’s the way it is in a crowded house.
And by the way, Griffin got my second-place MVP vote because he was a rock over the course of the season for a Clippers team that posted more victories (57) then the two-time defending champion Heat (54). And they did it in a tougher conference.
So there.
If that seems illogical to you, I don’t mind. You are entitled to your opinion.
But I am not the only one who believed Griffin deserved a higher placement on the ballot than James. Doc Rivers, the coach of the Clipper, said the same thing less than two weeks ago.

Despite your convoluted and misguided explanation, you’ve secured your spot as one of the most insignificant minds in the sports industry.
coltraning says
Wow, you are a staggeringly stupid basketball mind. And DOC RIVERS!!! Griffin’s coach???? THAT was the support you found for your moron position. Oh well, as Fox News proves again and again, stupid is not a disqualifier. And I thought Skip Bayless was a simpleton…
danbubbs says
your vote, the only one, is just some way to be “shocking.” if you watch the games, there’s no way you put Blake Griffin over lebron, game in game out Bron is dynamic in a way Griffin is not.

You are a disgrace to sports writers. End of story

Only thing Blake does better than Labron is make better commercials. You truly do not deserve a vote!
Andrew J says
If you had put Jordan over Labron i would understan but Blake cme on! He does have better commercials if you said that it would almost mmake sense, other than you really don’t deserve a vot!

Opinions are like assholes: Everyone has one, but yours is either uninformed or an attention grab. To argue that ANYONE is better than LeBron James is sheer lunacy. He’s twice as good as the next guy (Durant) in the league; yet you place him under Blake Griffin too, and argue that his head coach agrees with you. I’m sure Blake’s parents agree with you too. “Congratulations.”
Enjoy the extra web hits; but remember, “fame” is fleeting. Soon you’ll go back to being the nobody, no one knew you were. Perhaps Deron Williams for MVP? That should get some attention too.
Richard McKee says
Amen to that. Just goes to show you that media guys are there to foment conversation, not give a valued opinion.
coltraning says
Kia Motors also agrees with Sheridan:-)
RP says
No reason anyone should have to explain their choices and there’s no law that says LeBron is always to be the #1 pick for everything. If that was the case there would be no reason to vote or play. Personally, I don’t see him as the best in the league either.
Joman says
Lebrons not just the best in the leage hes the best ever
Justin says
This is such an obvious ploy to get attention, only reinforced now by making sure to promote himself as the “only…”. Just terrible reasoning given. Blake’s coach likes him. His team won, what, 3 more games, than a Heat team that didn’t bother playing Wade half the time. And Blake is a rock…unlike Lebron who offers nothing for the Heat? I guess it worked, though, since I had never heard of him yesterday. Unfortunately, though, he’ll just be remembered as the nba analyst who doesn’t know much about basketball. Good luck with that. Hope whoever gave this guy a vote in this wises up and gives it to someone not so busy trying to make a name for themselves.
Brian Dodd says
First mistake: not voting Lebron 1st team. Second mistake: voting the second most valuable player on the Clippers ahead of Lebron for MVP. I like your unlogical style.
Patrick says
C’mon Sheridan,
Quit trying to make waves and quit trying to be cute. We all know Lebron is the best player in the league and it ain’t even close, brotha! You definitely know your shit – certainly more than me and virtually every other jackass who comments on the internet – so maybe thats why you outthought yourself on this one. Kinda like Pop leaving out Duncan on that infamous Ray Allen 3-pointer possession last year in Game 6. I get it. Blake and KD were great all year and put up better team records. But trade Lebron for either guy straight up. Does the team who received LeBron immediately get better? Of course they do. But hey – if your goal was to be absolutely roasted by every blog and media member (even Jackie Macmullan on Around the Horn.. yikes) then you fuckin did it, bro. In all honesty, keep up the good work my man. But in the loose words of Colin Cowherd – Next time Superman misses a pickpocket in New Jersey, why don’t we just let it slide and admit he’s still the muthafuckin truth?
Mike says
LBJ is a more complete and better player than Durant and Griffin. If they started the league over and held a draft LBJ would be the number one pick. Get your head out of your a$$.

spell ass like a man

For me to respond to an opinion and take time to reply is a big deal! I don’t do it and rarely have. You suck as a journalist! It must have been a personal reason for you not to include LeBron on first team ballot. I don’t accept your lame reason at all! Your website should be boycotted!
Topher Rhett says
I suspect the actual reason Sheridan left Lebron off the 1st team was b/c being the lone “journalist” to leave him off, he is the outlier, and that will drive traffic to his website.
It worked in getting me to this website. So bravo for that. At least Le Batard gave his Hall of Fame vote away for principles.
Also, citing Rivers’ opinion about his own player as a reason for having Blake rated higher is absurd. If Sheridan is going to lie he should at least make an effort.
coltraning says
yup…it’s like the disruptive asshole at the concert. Sheridan is doing the journalist version of the troll, and thinking it will work. What it has done, I think is make many people right him off on the subject of basketball forever. Like many have said, Griffin wasn’t even the best player on his team….
