Over the weekend, it was reported that Jason Kidd was eyeing the coaching job of the Milwaukee Bucks after failing to come to terms with the Brooklyn Nets for a high position in the front office. That news left some to wonder what would happen to Larry Drew if the Bucks decided to go after Kidd.
On Monday, it was reported that the Bucks would send two second-round draft picks to the Nets to allow Kidd to walk out of the remaining two years of his contract, becoming Milwaukee’s new head coach. This meant the immediate firing of Drew, who apparently knew as much as the rest of us about his fate throughout the entire process, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:
The Bucks will fire coach Larry Drew, who had been on the job for one season. New Bucks ownership had communicated nothing to Drew through the past several days of negotiations with Kidd and the Nets, sources said.
On one hand, the front office and owners have the right to do anything they want with their team. It is their money and despite the firing, they’ll still have to pay Drew for the remaining two years left on his contract. From a financial standpoint, no one really loses here. On the other hand, it’s not always about the money, as an irritated Reggie Miller pointed out:
What did Larry Drew ever do to anybody?? Look Owners can hire n fire whoever they want, in this case, BAD BUSINESS!

Miller’s frustration is understandable. The Bucks’ treatment of Drew was classless, and it’s fair to call the former coach a victim in this situation – regardless of the job he did in his first year with the team (which was questionable at best). It’s also highly questionable for Kidd to eye a coaching position that had already been filled – most coaches out there would never disrespect another coach’s job in the manner that Kidd has. Stepping on other people’s toes appears to be what he does best, though, and this is yet another example of it.
Not too many players actually reacted to the unexpected coaching move by the Bucks, but at least one player will miss the first coach he ever had in the NBA:
Thanks for everything coach.. pic.twitter.com/ADf4ZucgDL
