Tweet of the Day: Derrick Rose Impresses At Team USA Practice

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has spent an almost innumerable amount of time (years, months, weeks, days, hours…) focused on rehabilitation while sidelined with injuries.

Finally, he is back.

At least, that was the hope heading into Monday’s Team USA practice in Las Vegas. Sometimes, hope is all you have. Then, there are the bright spots where your hope is superseded by reality. This could be one of those times.

Reaction from those who were at the practice seems to be quite impressive.

Of course, there was plenty of coverage.

The response to Rose’s renewed athleticism has been tremendous. It even had San Antonio Spurs rookie Kyle Anderson expressing his anguish for not being in attendance.

Rose talked to Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, and expressed the difference between his return a year ago and his return this summer.

I think when I came back last time I wanted it too bad. I was trying to force the game. This time around I’m trying to let the game come to me, of course be aggressive at times, but be in control of the game and be smarter, and be able to run the team at the point guard position.”

Rose has grown as a player, intimating Monday that he is working to play a lot smarter, learning to limit himself on the court, when necessary, “Trying to use a lot of floaters, a lot of pull-ups, stuff like that so you aren’t touched as much.”

I’m able to control my body a little bit more, using my speed more, being smart with my speed rather than just running wild out there. I’ve become a smarter player, but I’m mad it took me seven years to learn it.”

The Team USA staff seems to agree.

If Monday’s practice has done anything for basketball fans, it may have sparked renewed hope … not just for Rose, but for the Chicago Bulls to finally get back into the NBA Finals.

If Rose maintains his health heading into the 2014-15 NBA season, the Eastern Conference may very well be his to lose — all due respect to LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers and Chris Bosh’s Miami Heat.
