The newest craze to hit social media everywhere — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube — is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
What is the Ice Bucket Challenge?
Well, assuming you haven’t heard of it yet, it is a choice, whereby someone either donates $100 to the ALS Association or they accept the challenge and dump a bucket of ice water on their head. Many people are opting to do both, making a donation and taking the proverbial plunge.
The purpose of the challenge is two-fold, to both garner more donations and bring awareness to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Here is how ALS Association defines the disease:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) … is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
The challenge has made its way to some of the world’s most notable celebrities, including WWE COO and 13-time World Champion Triple H and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Now, NBA Athletes and teams are getting in on the action.

ALS is a terrible disease in need of a cure, and the Ice Bucket Challenge is bringing more people and much needed money to the cause to help fund research.
Recently, Facebook told TIME Magazine that the ALS challenge had generated more than 1.2 million unique videos on their social media site alone.
ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell tweeted out a significant and encouraging number relevant to the amount of money raised in donations in the past two weeks — since the challenge’s inception.
$9.5M in donations to @alsassociation over last two weeks vs $1.6M over same time period last year #IceBucketChallenge

With many more challenges left unclaimed, it is fair to say that we haven’t seen the last of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and for researchers, that is most certainly a good thing.
If you would like to make a donation to the ALS Association, visit their website (www.alsa.org), or click here.
