It’s no secret that former NBA star Stephon Marbury is not a fan of Mike D’Antoni after “playing” for him in his final season with the New York Knicks.
To make a long story short, the point guard felt betrayed by D’Antoni after being told that he would have a clean slate with the team in the 2008-2009 season if he came to camp in shape – which he did – only to be publicly humiliated by being benched in favor of Chris Duhon and put on the inactive list. Marbury was eventually bought out by the Knicks and found himself with the Boston Celtics for a brief stretch before heading off to play in China for good.
It’s safe to say that things ultimately did not end well in New York for Marbury, but the guard has said over the years that he still loves the team, and has occasionally shared his opinion on what is going on with the organization.
Thursday turned out to be another one of those days when he expressed his feelings on what Knicks fans will want right off the bat in the upcoming season:
No disrespect to DFisher but the garden will be chanting we want PHIL the first game in the garden.
— I AM PEACE STAR (@StarburyMarbury) August 15, 2014
It’s hard to tell where exactly this particular thought came from, but we’ll have to presume he doesn’t believe in Derek Fisher’s ability to lead the team back to relevance despite knowing the intricacies of the Triangle offense. It’s either that or he saw who the Knicks will have to play against in the first game of the season – the Chicago Bulls – and is predicting an ugly loss on opening night.
Will things get so bad for the Knicks this season that fans at the Garden will start chanting for something they know will not happen, which is the return of Phil Jackson as the head coach of the team? Jackson, at this point, is simply unfit to coach due to his physical limitations.
So it’s clear what Marbury apparently believes will happen to the Knicks, but we’ll have to see how the team operates under such a radical change in system first before coming to any kind of conclusion at this point. The Garden can get pretty volatile when things are going badly, but it’s hard to imagine them chanting for Jackson from the get-go.
