While the NBA has dominated the headlines over the past few summer months, as tradition has it, things have gone stale in August while players take their vacations before training camp begins in the fall.
Filling the void the NBA has left has been the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which has swept the nation by storm over the past few weeks, raising an enormous amount of awareness and money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also — and more commonly known — as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Over 30,000 Americans have the disease, which is why the celebrity support for this challenge has been so inspiring.
The challenge has become controversial in a way – some are displeased with this becoming purely a social media stunt — but the bottom line is that over 1.2 million videos have been posted on Facebook since June 1st and it has been mentioned over 2.2 million times on Twitter according to this article in the New York Times on Sunday.
While not every participant has donated, the ALS foundation has received over $13.3 million in donations since July 29, 2014 compared to just $1.7 million during the same period in 2013.
The numbers don’t lie.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, no matter how you participate, is nothing but positive.
By now, almost every athlete has participated in some form, and most recently, LeBron James took to the task, accepting the challenge from Kevin Durant:
#ALSIceBucketChallenge I accepted the challenge from @brandonweems10 @kdtrey5 djstephfloss… http://t.co/pdFgnubUNd
— LeBron James (@KingJames) August 17, 2014
What LeBron didn’t get to mention in his tweet was that he is officially challenging the president of the United States, Barack Obama.
Talk about influence.
LeBron already proved he was the most powerful man in basketball, and now he is forcing the president to pour a bucket of ice water on his head.
For a tremendous cause, of course.
