With training camp slated to begin in just under a week, players and teams are putting in the work necessary to get ready for the long, 82-game grind of a season. There are plenty of new faces in new places, and a number of fascinating story lines to follow as the season progresses.
One team with a plethora of new faces is the Dallas Mavericks. Owner Mark Cuban and his team had quite an interesting and successful offseason.
To remake the roster, Cuban traded for Raymond Felton and Tyson Chandler, the latter starting his second stint with the organization. Cuban also made another big investment this summer when he signed Chandler Parsons to a three-year, $46 million offer sheet, who was a restricted free agent after spending his first three years in Houston.
When the Rockets passed on matching the offer sheet, Cuban landed a young, talented wing who can help rejuvenate the Mavericks. Dallas needed to add a third scorer to team with Monta Ellis and Dirk Nowitzki, and it’s safe to say it found one.
To add to their exciting summer, the Mavericks and Cuban introduced their new alternate uniforms to debut during the 2015-16 season during a news conference Tuesday. This photo from the Mavericks official Instagram account gives you a look ahead.
Pretty sweet, right?
Cuban being Cuban, he wanted to make sure everyone knew that these uniforms are the first to be designed by fans. Through social media and surveys, etc., fans were able to provide some input on the final design of the jerseys. They feature a rendering of the downtown Dallas skyline, just above the lettering. Maybe the rest of the NBA will follow suit, maybe they won’t, but it’s nice to see something on the front of a jersey other than just bold letters. Yawn.
However, Cuban isn’t the only one in Dallas looking to change things up a bit. Nowitzki has reportedly been working in Germany the past few weeks to speed up the release of his shot.
Even though he stands 7 feet tall, Dirk is getting up there in age. He turned 36 this past summer and is entering his 17th season in the NBA. With Father Time taking his toll on Dirk, it is smart for him to work on speeding up his release, as his legs might not have as much lift.
If there’s a couple things we know about the Mavericks, it’s that Cuban will always find a way to make headlines, and Dirk will get his buckets.
Now with a legitimate chance to make it to the Finals in a difficult Western Conference, maybe all the changes will help Dallas hang another championship banner in the rafters.
