It has long been speculated that the Minnesota Timberwolves wanted to sign point guard Ricky Rubio to a long-term deal despite his inability to score effectively, and it finally came to fruition on Friday when they signed him to a four-year, $55 million contract extension.
Rubio now looks to be a cornerstone of the team for years to come and help Minnesota rebuild with No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins on board after trading away franchise player Kevin Love over the summer. For the most part, the point guard has looked pretty good in the early going, averaging 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in the first two games of the season.
After his signing was reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Rubio confirmed as much and shared his excitement on twitter:
Happy to announce Im gonna be in Minnesota for 4 more years. Thanks to the fans who have supported me since day one. Couldn’t be more happy.
