Washington Wizards shooting guard Martell Webster is currently rehabbing from back surgery to correct a herniated disc in his lower back. Though he had a successful microdisectomy at the end of June, he likely will not return to action for at least another month.
Webster, 27, as recently as an October article in the Washington Post, has made it clear that he does not intend to play beyond his current contract
I know this game is probably not going to be the healthiest thing for me if I try to stretch it out as much as a possibly can. So I intend to really give everything I got for these last three years of my contract and probably walk away from this game so I can be healthy. … I’ve always wanted to retire young. I love this game and I respect this game, but I only want to be in it as long as I can be effective and as long as I can feel comfortable.”
His current deal, which runs through the 2016-17 NBA season, will end when he is just hitting the mid-point of being 30. The last year of his contract, however, is not guaranteed, so he could potentially be walking away from the game at the age of 29. Considering his struggles with back problems—three surgeries since 2010, that might be for the best for his long-term health.
While committed to returning to the court this season and aiding the Wizards in their attempt to make another playoff run, he has been busy pursuing off-court interests with his free time. One of those interests is music, for which he has recorded a 13-track hip hop album under the alias Sui Generis. His album is titled, “A.R.T.T.” (Anybody Relates to This). To say he is simply looking forward to his album’s release might be an understatement.
He took to Twitter to invite his fans to follow along (on social media) as his musical journey begins.
My Album is coming soon and I would love for you all to follow this journey. To be a part of it follow… http://t.co/Be3P7TGzkY
