The 76ers may be piling up the losses stateside, but the seeds of their rebuilding plan are slowly growing thousands of miles away as a couple of their Eurostash prospects are beginning to sprout.
Which American just left Europe and is a possible candidate to sign with the Lakers?
What has former first rounder James Anderson been up to this season? David Blatt’s Cavaliers may be under the microscope by not starting off the season as strong as anticipated, but what is going on with his former club Maccabi Tel-Aviv?

Dario Saric has his coming out party in the Euroleague
After a rough start to the season where he struggled accepting his role and faced some minor injuries, Dario Saric had his breakout game against Nizhny Novgorod in the Euroleague this past Thursday. With former NBA and CSKA center Nenad Krstic out with an injury, suddenly more minutes became available to Saric, who delivered with 18 points (7/10 from 2PT), 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 22 minutes in a 76-66 win for Anadolu Efes over the Russian squad.
This performance should be a huge confidence booster for Saric, showing that he can be a valuable contributor to this team, and will hopefully help him become more accepting of his role. On top European clubs, teams are far less “star oriented” than in the NBA, and with teams usually going 12 deep, players must have an understanding that if you play correctly, the sun will shine on someone different every game.
While Saric may have gotten used to being “the man” with Cibona, he will need to learn how to make the most of his opportunities with Anadolu Efes as he continues to establish himself at the highest level of Europe.
Furkan Aldemir breaking out for Galatasaray
Saric isn’t the only “Sixer” getting some seasoning in Turkey this season. Furkan Aldemir, the 53rd pick in the 2012 Draft whose rights are being retained by Philadelphia, is having an outstanding start to the season, averaging 9.1 points and 9.9 rebounds in 23.7 minutes through his first 8 games (Euroleague and Turkish TBL combined).
After being arguably the best domestic player in the Turkish league last season, Aldemir has stepped up his rebounding game, and has been showing that he is among the top rebounders in Europe, tallying 12 rebounds against Valencia in Euroleague, 15 against Usak in Turkish league and a whopping 18 against Banvit, one of the top Turkish teams this season.
Aldemir signed a reported 3-year contract extension worth an estimated 4 million Euros, presumably with a hefty buyout, so he may not be headed stateside for quite some time, but he could have a Tiago Splitter like impact if he arrived in the league during his prime.
Buycks out of Valencia, Bo McCalebb to replace him?
After being released by the Toronto Raptors this past summer, Dwight Buycks headed to pursue an opportunity with Valencia, who joined the Euroleague after winning the Eurocup championship this past season. After a solid start to the season, Buycks opted to exercise an out in his contract to pursue a potential NBA deal, rumored to be either with OKC (who just signed Ish Smith), or the struggling Los Angeles Lakers.
The 6’3” point guard failed to make an impact in his lone season with Toronto, but after a full year of experience in the league, Buycks should get another chance to prove he can be a quality backup in the NBA, instead of continuing his rise through the Euro ranks.
With Buycks’s departure, Valencia now has an opening that could be filled by perennial All-Euroleague guard Bo McCalebb, who has been waiting on the sidelines for a proper offer. With no NBA teams offering the type of money or role McCalebb felt he deserved, and the options closing for the guard with the top-paying Turkish and Russian teams, McCalebb may have finally found his Euroleague landing spot for the time being.
With Valencia standing at just 1-3 through the first four Euroleague games, look for McCalebb to sign with an option to leave if Valencia does not qualify for the top 16, so he can cash in on the chance that one of the top teams needs an upgrade to make a run at a Euroleague title.
Former first rounder James Anderson goes off for 27 points against Unics Kazan
In his first year overseas after four season in the NBA (3 with the Spurs, 1 with Philly), James Anderson made a statement this week in the Euroleague in Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania) over the Russian side Unics Kazan. Going off for 27 points (11/11 FT) 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, he out-dueled super scorer Keith Langford’s 24 points, proving that with about two months of European experience he is already among the continent’s elite talents.
Anderson showed he can be a quality player when given the chance last season, averaging over 10 points for the Sixers, and will have a nice opportunity this season to show he can really help a team with his shooting when given the chance. At just 25 years old, the best days seem to be ahead of Anderson, and it will be interesting to see if he can use this season to propel himself back to the league, or if he will be a perennial top Euroleague player over the next few years.
Reigning Euroleague champions Maccabi Tel-Aviv going through some November struggles
In what seems like a déjà vu from last season, Maccabi Tel-Aviv suffered two consecutive embarrassing defeats to start the month of November. Maccabi was thrashed in Hapoel Jerusalem’s brand new stadium by a whopping 30 points this past Sunday, behind Donta Smith’s brilliant 24 point, 8 rebound, 5 assist and 2 block performance. The 93-63 loss marks the largest point margin in a Maccabi Tel-Aviv loss in the club’s history in Israeli league. It comes off as a bit perplexing that Maccabi opted not to pursue Donta Smith after he stole the championship from Maccabi in 2013, and came within seconds of doing it again last season, both with Maccabi Haifa. Maccabi Tel-Aviv has a long history of paying a pretty penny to keep most of the league’s best talents on their side, and it is surprising that Maccabi would allow Smith, who has been the league’s best player for two seasons, to suit up for a rival squad.
Looking to brush off the loss, Maccabi was stunned again by the young Croatian team, Cedevita Zagreb, on their home floor in Nokia this past Thursday by 10 points (83-73). Former NBA point guard Roko Ukic was fantastic for Cedevita, with 17 points and 6 assists, as the Croatians celebrated one of their most quality wins in the club’s history. While they may have faced Maccabi after a shellshocking loss, it is not very often a club of their stature can pull a victory in one of the most difficult arenas to play on the road in Europe.
After finishing October with a blowout win over Alba Berlin in Berlin and coming into the month holding their head up high, Maccabi couldn’t have been brought down to Earth any harder than it has this past week. While things may be looking a bit bleak for Maccabi at the moment, one can’t forget that the situation was not all that different last season as Maccabi struggled out of the gates, losing early games to Hapoel Holon and Ironi Nes-Ziona, with many calling for David Blatt to be fired, before pulling an absolute 180 and winning the Euroleague Championship. Time will tell if Maccabi will have a similar turnaround like last season, but they will need to wake up quick because come Monday, they will host Hapoel Tel-Aviv in a “Derby” (hometown rivalry game), always a physical, chippy showdown between the Tel-Aviv squads.
