Friday night was a milestone-reaching one for Rajon Rondo, who passed Paul Pierce for fourth all-time in Boston Celtics franchise history for assists.
Unfortunately, the point guard also came up with some dubious plays down the stretch that contributed to the 122-121 loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Celtics were up 19 points heading into the fourth quarter and were well on their way to an even record of 4-4. Instead, LeBron James and Kyrie Irving scored a combined 25 points in the final period and made all the necessary plays down the stretch to come up with the impressive comeback victory.
James, in particular, was simply on killer mode, scoring eight of the Cavaliers final nine points in the last two minutes. He also blocked a layup attempt by Rondo, and the ball ricocheted off of Rondo’s foot out of bounds.
Then came the final play of the game. Down by one with just seconds remaining on the clock, Rondo did this:
Rondo lost control of his dribble for a brief second, and that’s all it took for him to launch a shot after the game clock expired.
Celtics fan Bill Simmons saw all the action and here’s how he reacted:
