Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks suffered yet another heartbreaking loss on Thursday – this time against the Cleveland Cavaliers at home 90-87.
Not unlike many of their previous losses, the Knicks put in the effort and played a hard-fought game. Unfortunately, Anthony played his ugliest game of the season offensively, scoring nine points on just four-of-19 shooting from the field. His potential game-tying 3-pointer at the end of the game bounced off the rim, sending New York to its 16th loss of the season.
The loss put their overall record to 4-16, the worst start in franchise history. To put it another way, they are only two games ahead of the tanking Philadelphia 76ers in the standings.
One key player who did manage to provide a major spark was Amare Stoudemire, who had 18 points on eight-of-13 shooting to go with nine rebounds. The power forward willingly dived to the floor on multiple occasions in an effort to try to save possessions for his team, and has looked rejuvenated this season without having to deal with all the chronic knee issues that have dogged him in recent years. Witness this monster dunk on Anderson Varejao he had early in the fourth quarter:
If you remember, Stoudemire shared a selfie on instagram of himself taking a wine bath to rejuvenate his body during the preseason.
Apparently, it’s working for him. Unfortunately, the method turned into comedy material for Charles Barkley after the Knicks’ latest loss, via Michael Lee of Washington Post:
Charles Barkley on Amaré Stoudemire bathing in red wine to regain his old form. “The way they playing he should be drinking it.” #knicks
