In his most recent column, Danny Schayes noted how the Utah Jazz were doing a pretty nice job of playing spoilers, beating a bunch of the top playoff contending teams.
Lots of crazy outcomes can happen in the late days of a season, and Schayes recounted a pair of instances when his team was out of the playoff picture but came up with victories that were not only unlikely, but uncommon for the circumstances that surrounded them. Here is a link to the column.
One such story was a game in New York that I covered, with the Orlando Magic defeating the New York Knicks on Patrick Ewing poster night. One irate fan held up a poster right behind the Knicks bench and started punching it. Even Marv Albert, then a Knicks announcer, seemed irritated by what Schayes had done.
He tells more of the story in this video with Cinesport’s Noah Coslov.
