This is one huge piece of news being reported by Al Iannazzone of the Bergen Record.
Remember, the Nets insisted they would not give up their pile of assets last season without a guarantee from Carmelo Anthony that he’d sign with them long-term, and then they went out and made the monster gamble anyway in sending all those assets to Utah.
The Nets can still pay Williams $25.7 million more than anyone else if he opts out and then re-signs for the move to Brooklyn. If that happens, he would make $100.05 million from the Nets, whereas the most any other team could offer is $74.3 million.
From Iannazzone in The Record: “The slim hope the Nets had of Deron Williams signing a contract extension has been dashed completely. Williams’ agent said his client will play out this season and become a free agent next summer. “Deron will not be signing the extension,” Jeff Schwartz told The Record this afternoon. “Based on the new rules it doesn’t make any sense for him to sign the extension. It has nothing to do with how much he likes New Jersey. Because of the rules, he’s going to play the season out and opt out of his deal.”

I know this web site gives quality depending content and other stuff, is there any other
website which provides such stuff in quality?
Dennis says
Chris would you mind clarifying your first sentence in this article “This is one huge piece of news being reported by Al Iannazzone of the Bergen Record.”?
I think this is the part that rubs people the wrong way. Was it meant to be sarcastic? All the facts in the report would lead one to believe this should have been a widely expected decision from Deron Williams and not exactly a huge piece of news.
PAT_EWING says
Chris Sheridan is an embarrassment to Knicks fans and sports writers. He got canned from ESPN for lying about sources, and still nobody would read his articles. He’s honestly one of the worst writers in sports, period. Just check his laughable lockout coverage for proof.
Randy Oreens says
For a Knick fan to say that I actually have respect for. The guy will do or say anything for someone to read his blog. He knew NBA fans wanted the NBA back so posted random stuff about NBA lockout ending soon.
Brett says
+1 to this.
Brett says
This isn’t news at all.
But in typical Chris Sheridan fashion, he ignores reality and writes garbage like this.
“Deron Williams shocks the world by choosing the option of a $100 million contract over a $39mil extension.”
No wonder you were fired. Hack.
Randy Oreens says
He does not like the Nets so any negative news he gets about the Nets he posts the worst part of it, he wouldnt do that if he wasnt scared at the fact the Nets are going to run NYC.
Yeah Chris the Nets are leaving the mouse trap building and moving into a BILLION DOLLAR ARENA.
MSG is almost as old as you Chris.

Amazing how people just reads headlines, and believe what they want to think about it.
Either that, or they just plainly have problems with reading comprehension.
Dee says
read this:
@DeronWilliams
Deron Williams
Don’t know why people are tripping just bc I’m opting out doesn’t mean that I won’t resign with the nets! W/ new CBA it makes sense
illyb says
Will situations play out like this from now on? Players deciding it makes financial sense with shorter contracts to play out the guaranteed years before resigning.
Steven says
Does no one realize that it makes no sense for him to sign the extension (same goes for Howard)? It makes much more sense for him to sign an entirely new deal with NJ. Billy King even said he expected Williams to opt for free agency.
There is absolutely no “huge piece of news” here, Sheridan.
Steven says
Deron Williams chooses potential of $101 million over $39 million, shocks nation
Danxcr says
exactly my point. Look at his tweet

heyyy says
how surprising another hack article from net hating chris sheridan! of course he’s opting out, you have to opt out first in order to get more when you re-sign. ex cc sabathia.
Mecca says
Haaa like the Yankees and NJ Nets are anywhere near the same situation. Like comparing a Ferrari to a Yugo. Come on, get real.
CC wasn’t going anywhere and just wanted to milk the cow a little more. Williams, just like Paul and Howard, is going to wait and see how things shake out. But don’t be naive, the chances of any of those 3 staying in the current situation is slim to none, and slim skipped town.
Mecca says
Williams doesn’t want to sign the Nets extension??? I’m shocked I tell ya, shocked!!!
All kidding aside, if you were Williams would you? Based on his commets from Turkey, he has a lukewarm at best interest in staying in NJ. The Nets better have a plan B.
Henry says
you are obviously not very good at reading, based on the rules it doesnt make sense for him to sign one, nets can offer him more by him opting out nets can offer 5yrs $100mil, any other team can only offer 4yrs $75mil, i guess you decided to overlook the part his agent said about it has nothing to do with how much he likes NJ
Mecca says
Henry, I have no problem reading what the agent said. I suggest you get better at reading the writing on the wall however. Might better help you prepare for what’s likely to happen after this season.
Based on you GMs past, I wouldnt have much faith in what’s to come next. I fully expect a max or near max deal for Nene or Chandler as his next move.
Andres says
DUH MECCA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andres says
Of course he’s not good at reading. Knicks fan are so intellectually challenged it’s not even funny.
Danxcr says
also when the Nets traded for Deron last year, Deron wasn’t available to sign the extension yet. That is why they did it with not extension.
Perry says
I will enjoy the 2018 lockout just as much as i did this one. the owners saved cash but the league is going to be the same. they tried to put out a fire with a squirt gun. small-mid market teams have to be screaming at this deal.
Danxcr says
You do know by not signing an extension, with the new CBA in place he can get a 5 year $101M deal in the off season. More money than if he took the extension right now.
Now lets say he walks from the Nets and goes to another team, max he can get is 4 years / $73M. I think nets put a playoff team around him, and he stays.
Name 1 player in the NBA, or even other sports is going to give up $30-$40M dollars. If the nets are competitive it will be fine.
Jason says
I remember telling myself things like this when he was in Utah. Yes it’s a no brainer he passes on the extension but don’t kid yourself. It will take some luck on the Net’s part to fill a team to his satisfaction. Ask the Cavs fans how that worked for them. Don’t feed the egos!
Henry says
Cavs did a terrible job of bringing in pieces around lebron and were not in a position as the Nets are with cap space. Also there is a BIG difference between cleveland and brooklyn
Danxcr says
if nets put a team around him Nets will be fine. Are you not surprised how serious the nets are trying to be?
They chased Melo lost to the knicks, got Deron out of no where, and now chasing Dwight. All high risk high reward. Their owner is a gambling man, and is putting his money where his mouth is. Like Dolan, Cuban, and Buss.
