Glen “Big Baby” Davis returns to Boston in Monday’s best NBA game. No word yet as to whether he and the Orlando Magic will leave Celtics fans crying in their beer.
A fan favorite and Kevin Garnett’s occasional whipping boy, Davis spent his first four seasons with Boston and was a member of the 2008 championship team. Prior to this season, he joined the Magic in a sign-and-trade for Brandon Bass.
“He’s emotional. He might cry. We’ll make sure we bring a big pacifier,” said Magic center Dwight Howard, who needs 26 points to become the franchise’s all-time leading scorer.
Davis averaged 11.7 points and 9.5 rebounds with the Celtics but is at 7.9 points and 5.1 rebounds with Magic. His numbers aren’t the only thing that have dropped.
When he takes the court at TD Garden, Davis may not run into some of his old buddies. The Celtics could be without their starting backcourt of Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen, both of whom are nursing injuries.
Rondo suffered a sprained right wrist in Wednesday’s win over Toronto. Allen suffered a jammed left ankle in Sunday’s win over Washington. Both are uncertain for the contest against the Magic.
Even when healthy, the Celtics (6-9) haven’t been very good. They have lost six of their last eight games and their 6-9 mark includes three wins over Washington, the worst team in the NBA. Boston is 0-6 vs. teams above .500.
Meanwhile, the Magic (11-4) have won six of their last seven overall and boast a four-game road winning streak. They have been carried by Howard, who has ignored the continuous trade rumors to average a monstrous 24.6 points and 19.5 rebounds in his last five games.
Orlando is in a stretch of 10 games in 15 days and skipped Monday’s shootaround. That may help Hedo Turkoglu , who is expected to play despite back spasms.
