Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao is out indefinitely with a broken wrist.
The team announced Saturday that Varejao had an MRI on Saturday at the Cleveland Clinic that revealed a non-displaced fracture of his right wrist. He will undergo further tests this week to determine a timeline for his return.
Varejao suffered the injury early in the third quarter of Friday’s home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. He left the game and did not return.
It is the second straight season Varejao has suffered a serious injury. Last season, he tore a tendon in his foot that required season-ending surgery, one of many factors contributing to Cleveland’s NBA record 26-game losing streak and 19-63 overall mark.
The loss of Varejao is a big blow to the Cavaliers (10-15), who are trying to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff race and already are without rookie point guard and leading scorer Kyrie Irving, who has a concussion.
One of the best frontcourt defenders in the NBA, Varejao was averaging career highs of 10.8 points and 11.5 rebounds. He received some consideration as an All-Star reserve.
