NEW YORK — J.R. Smith is joining the New York Knicks after reportedly turning down an offer from coach Vinny Del Negro to immediately step in as the starting 2-guard for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Smith flew from China to America yesterday and was met at LAX by a Knicks team official, who then traveled with Smith with Las Vegas after learning that was where Smith was headed next, according to a report by John Canzano of the Oregonian.
“NY Knicks it is,” Smith said on his Twitter account.
Smith will provide the Knicks with a reliable 3-point threat, something they have been missing since trading away Danilo Gallinari last season in the Carmelo Anthony deal.
New York ranks 26th in the NBA in 3-point accuracy.
In China with the Zhejiang Chouzhou Golden Bulls, Smith shot 47.8 percent from 3-point range and averaged 34.4 points.
Here is video of him scoring 60 in a game during the Chinese Basketball Association season.
