I have to put someone No. 1, so … why not the Heat? Like it means anything. Given the fact they have a post-season tournament, where you stand at the 25-game mark has never been all-important. It may be all the more irrelevant in this compressed 66-game, 123-day season, 2011-12 season, with all the good teams young and all the old powers struggling. Oh, right, the Spurs. Well, they were so old for so long, they brought in enough kids to be young again! The

Prokhorov to sell Nets, donate fortune if elected president of Russia
It is unlikely, but Mikhail Prokhorov’s tenure as owner of the New Jersey Nets could be coming to an end. He also is vowing to donate $17 billion of his $18 billion fortune to charity if he defeats Vladimir Putin and several other candidates in the Russian presidential election. “I’ll need something to live on,” Prokhorov said in a talk show on state-run Russian television. “I’ll sell everything, all my assets when I become president and donate almost all of the money to
Durant does it again for Thunder; Paul Pierce passes Larry Bird on Celtics scoring list
The Thunder have found a knack for finishing off close games, as true championship contenders do, thanks to MVP candidate Kevin Durant. (Have you voted yet in that MVP poll to your right?) After winning a closely contested and controversial game one night earlier against the Trail Blazers, Durant scored 33 points for the second consecutive night and hit the game-winning bank shot with 14 seconds left against the Golden State Warriors in a wild game. Russell Westbrook also had a
Billups out for the season; ‘Melo for 1-2 weeks; Gallo for a month
On Monday, there were four injuries that could dramatically impact the NBA playoff picture. Chief among those was Chauncey Billups, who is out for the season with a torn Achilles’ tendon suffered in the Clippers bittersweet win over Orlando. An MRI exam revealed a full tear of the tendon. During the fourth quarter, Billups was trying to stop backpedaling, and he injured himself when he tried to switch direction and run forward. Averaging 15 points and 4 assists, Billups’ numbers will have
Tonight’s best game: Sacramento at Minnesota
When DeMarcus Cousins looks across the court Tuesday night, he will not see Kevin Love. That’s because Cousins has finally found a fellow player who controls his emotions worse than he does. Love is sidelined by a suspension, which means Cousins could have a big game when the Sacramento Kings visit the Minnesota Timberwolves in Tuesday’s best NBA game. Both Love and Cousins showed their frustration in recent games. However, it was Cousins who kept his emotions in check, while Love lost
Sheridan: Who will be snubbed in All-Star reserve voting?
// Who will be snubbed in All-Star reserve voting? Someone from the Sixers? Someone from the Cavs? One of the more productive power forwards in the West? CineSport’s Brian Clark & SheridanHoops.com’s Chris Sheridan discuss that question, along with the significance of Kobe Bryant’s scoring milestone and whether the Oklahoma City Thunder are potential champions.
New format for Rookie Game at All-Star Weekend
The Rookie-Sophomore Challenge is no more. The annual wide-open dunkfest pitting first-year players against second-year players will have a different format this year in Orlando, the NBA announced Tuesday. And under the new format, you might see Ricky Rubio throwing lobs to Blake Griffin. The Friday night affair will now be called the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, and each team will have rookies and sophomores. Each team also will have GMs who will pick from a pool of players selected by NBA assistant
Fantasy Spin: Tuesday, Feb. 7
Highlight Performance: DeMarcus Cousins, SAC– The behemoth center out of Kentucky, when mentally committed, is simply a beast around the paint. Although he can hit mid-range jumpers, he can rip down boards with the best of em. Against the Hornets, a team without Carl Landry and Jason Smith due to injuries, Cousins had his way, scoring 28 points, grabbing 19 rebounds, 3 blocks, and a steal. This was a monstrous game, but coming off his 21 point-20 rebound effort a few
