Whether you want to call him “Hibachi,” “Agent Zero” or some other new nickname, Gilbert Arenas is on the verge of a return.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal is reporting that Arenas worked out for the Grizzlies this morning and the team is preparing to sign him to a deal for the rest of this season, according to sources close to the process.
Beat writer Ron Tillery said Arenas appeared slender and shot the ball well during the workout, and he is scheduled to take a physical this afternoon.
If the three-time All-Star signs for the prorated veteran’s minimum, he would bring an outside shooting threat to a team currently ranked 29th in that category, making an average of only 3.8 per game. The Grizzlies begin a four-game West Coast trip Tuesday night at Sacramento.
Arenas has been unemployed since the Orlando Magic waived him under the amnesty clause prior to training camp. He worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this season, but they didn’t want him. Arenas has averaged 21.2 points and 5.4 assists in his 10 NBA seasons.
