Versatile forward Boris Diaw signed with the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, going from the league’s worst team to one of its best.
Diaw was in the final year of his contract when he was bought out by the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday. He joins the Spurs, who are second in the Western Conference and appear intent on chasing another championship.
Earlier this month, the Bobcats sat down Diaw, 29, for four games as they made a commitment to their younger players. He returned for two games as Charlotte showcased him for a possible trade, but no team expressed interest.
For the season, Diaw is averaging 7.4 points – his lowest since the 2004-05 season – with 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists. He has six career triple-doubles.
With the Spurs, the 6-8, 235-pound Diaw likely will back up Tim Duncan and DeJuan Blair at the two big spots.
A native of France, Diaw has played alongside Spurs All-Star guard Tony Parker on the French national team. He averaged 8.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists in Eurobasket 2011, helping France claim the silver medal.
