The Chicago Bulls could inch closer to securing the best record in the league while locking up the number one seed with a win against the second best team in the Eastern Conference. Whether they might actually want to secure the number one seed is another story. Holding the best record in the league, the Chicago Bulls (44-14) play host at the United Center to the visiting Miami Heat in Thursday’s best game on TNT. The two teams split the first two games of

Aldridge needs scope on right hip, done for season, Olympics in jeopardy
Portland Trail Blazers All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge has a labral tear in his right hip requiring surgery and will sit out the rest of the season, the team announced Thursday. The surgery is an arthroscopic procedure and will be performed by Dr. Marc Phillipon at a later date. Aldridge is expected to be ready for training camp next season, but his chances of making the 2012 United States Olympic team are in jeopardy. “In his most recent MRI, and following further evaluation,
Sheridan: What we’ll learn in tonight’s Heat-Bulls game
// What are we going to learn in tonight’s big Heat-Bulls matchup in Chicago? Hopefully, we’ll find out which stars can show some fourth-quarter moxie. But the better Chicago-Miami game to look forward to will happen next Thursday, when a clearer picture of playoff positioning possibilities will have emerged. There is a case to be made that it is better to be the No. 2 seed than the No. 1 seed, because it might mean an easier path to the conference finals
Portsmouth Day 1: Buffalo’s Mitchell Watt impresses
What I love most about the Portsmouth Invitation are seeing the diamonds in the rough. And there is the opportunity to have players jump out at you, players who you’d never regularly get the opportunity to see. I watch a ton of Knicks games. I don’t get the chance to see the University of Buffalo, the alma mater of one of my high school teammates who had a pretty solid career there. In the first game of a two-game showcase last night,
The Bernucca List – Edition 20
We try to make The Bernucca List somewhat challenging, but last week’s edition appeared to be a bit too challenging. Just one reader chimed in – Dylan, whose incorrect guess was followed by, “This is a tough one.” Apparently so. For the third time in for weeks, our readers were unable to come up with the right answer, which was “Active players who have been suspended or fined for moving violations.” We thought the inclusion of Tyreke Evans, J.R. Smith and Delonte
Heisler: It’s Magic! Now you see 7-foot superstar, now you don’t
Dwight Howard’s decision to stay another season didn’t turn out to be such good news for the Magic, after all? Gosh, who’d have thunk it? Before zeroing in on the Magic, I should note, in fairness, it’s hardly the NBA’s only dysfunctional organization. Actually, as a former GM noted the other day, dysfunction is the rule, not the exception. Take the Lakers. They’ve been as sharp as anyone despite a sibling rivalry between Jim and Jeannie Buss, with father Jerry supporting Jim and former coach
The Picker hits 2 out of 3, raises winning percentage
If you check out last night’s picks from “The Picker,” you will find two entries in the comments section from the man himself. The one that carries the most weight: “Now hitting 67% of my picks w/ a great 2-0-1 night tonight (actually 2-1 – CS) for my first week on here. That includes my worst day of my year of betting within that week. AND i’m still at 67%! Boom let’s make some money people! As we always caution, do what
Fantasy Spin: Thursday April 12
Who needs Kobe Bryant? Not the Lakers, if last night’s impressive road win means anything. You have to start with Andrew Bynum grabbing 30 rebounds, which has happened exactly twice in 12 years. He added 16 points but was unhappy with his 7-20 shooting. Metta World Peace had 26 points, easily a season high, and Pau Gasol (21 & 11) played well. It was a rare off-night for the Spurs: Danny Green scored 22, but Tony Parker went just 2-12
