Could the Boston Celtics beat the Miami Heat in a playoff series? Well, they couldn’t a year ago, when they managed more than 91 points just once in five games and looked a tad long in the tooth. If Boston was to beat Miami, it appeared it would have to find a way to stall LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in transition and make every game a walk-it-up, grind-it-out affair, where the Celtics excel and the Heat are not exactly comfortable. The Celts

Fantasy Spin: Wednesday April 11
I had a feeling that Richard Hamilton was due. Though still limited to 20 minutes, Rip scored 20 points, had 5 assists and 4 rebounds to make up for the absence of Derrick Rose (ankle) as he and Luol Deng (19 PTS, 10 REB) led the Bulls to a tough win. Carmelo Anthony had 29 for the Knicks, with Tyson Chandler (10 PTS, 15 REB, 3 BLK) playing well, but the point guard spot remains a problem. Baron Davis (8
The Picker sends Gus Forrest to sleep with the fishes
The “Picker went 2-1 last night by taking LeBron James over 26 and the Mavericks giving 9.5 points to the Kings. He lost on Miami, and his Bulls pick was cancelled when Derrick Rose did not play. Also, he hit a pick two nights ago with the Rockets (he touted them money line when they were 3-point dogs) that was not published because of a miscommunication. So his record after one week is 8-5-1. Not bad at all. Not great, but let’s just say

“The Picker” is challenged by Gus Forrest
Memo to “The Picker.” Meet Gus Forrest (that’s not him pictured, but it is a famous Gus). Mr.Forrest has been following the picks made on this site by “The Picker,” he thinks he can do better, and he is willing to pick every single game tonight, both against the spread and the over/under, to prove his manliness. First we’ll give you tonight’s picks from “The Picker,” who is 5-4-1 since undertaking this risk of public humiliation six days ago. He has been holding
Tonight’s best game: Boston at Miami
After looking old and uncertain at various times during the season, the Boston Celtics have hit their stride just in time to take a convincing Atlantic Division lead as the playoffs draw near. As usual, defense has been the key. They have allowed just 89.3 points per game this season, good for third best in the league. Since the insertion of Avery Bradley in the starting lineup nine games ago, they have been even better, giving up an average of 81.7 on
D-League sets record with 50 call-ups
The D-League had a record 50 players called up to the NBA this season, the league announced Tuesday. The D-League also set a record with 64 NBA player assignments. The records are pleasant news for the D-League but not surprising given the abbreviated NBA training camps and the proliferation of injuries in this truncated 66-game season. The previous records were 40 call-ups in the 2009-10 season and 56 assignments in the 2010-11 campaign. All 30 NBA teams currently have at least one player
