$1,000 Sheridan Hoops Fantasy Contest
Three more days! Our season-opening fantasy tournament on October 31 has $1,000 in cash prizes for a $2 entry fee. If you haven’t tried FanDuel yet, check out their free NFL leagues this weekend and you’ll be impressed.
It’s easy to sign up, fun to pick a team (9 players within a $60,000 salary cap) and a fascinating challenge to your fantasy hoops handicapping skills. It’s a one-day points league. Scoring is simple — PTS = 1pt, REB = 1pt, AST = 1pt, BLK = 2pts, STL = 2pts, TO = -1pt — and the top 61 finishers will share in the payouts, ready the next day via PayPal.

Kudos to FanDuel for adjusting already to the big trade. Kevin Martin was a nice play in the HOU@DET game on Hallowe’en, but he’s no longer eligible that night. Nor is James Harden, as the Oct. 31 contests were already open, with salaries fixed.
The chart on the right will be a daily fixture in this space. It’s not my actual lineup, which consists of nine positions (2 PG, 2 SG, 2 SF, 2 PF, 1 C) without going over the 60K salary cap. It’s just a sample of players I like in each price range.
“Stars” seems self-explanatory. They are the most expensive, and you can’t afford too many. “Scrubs” is not a derogatory term, it’s simply what we call the best bargains each day. The salaries for this tournament were set weeks ago, and several players have shown themselves to be better than expected during camp. “Stars and Scrubs” is a long-established auction strategy that applies to this format too.
The more Scrubs you use, the more Stars you can afford. My third category is called Starters, the medium priced group you can plug in to complete your lineup. That there are technically NBA “stars” like Marcin Gortat and Marc Gasol (each $7,000) on this part of the list isn’t important. You can build a team of all Starters — the average price of nine players under a $60K cap is $6,600 — and win.
My lineup will change right up until the 7:00 deadline on Wednesday, and I might even enter a second team — you’re allowed up to five — but want all our readers to have a chance to join first. See you there!

As detailed as Jeff Nichols’ series was, it’s a stretch to think anyone with a ‘life’, i.e. wife, job, kids, school commitments, etc. would have been able to absorb all 13,500 + words.
And your column was just a rehash, if not lovefast of everything Nichols wrote.
Please, let the readers decide how best to apply any of what he wrote to their own fantasy requirements.
Also, please, be more concise in your opinions.
I’m not questioning your expertise, but at this rate I get more info is less time by reading Rotoworld’s daily ‘player news’ category with appropriate links.
The season hasn’t started, but at the rate you are writing, I get the impression your fantasy staff will be exhausted by Feb. 1, either with writers’ cramps or sore-handed from patting each other on the back so much.
