Mitnick: Top 50 American Players in Euroleague

25.   Acie Law, 6’3”, PG, 1985, Team: Olympiacos (Greece), College: Texas A&M

After struggling initially to start the year with Partizan last season, Law has been showing flashes of why he was a lottery pick coming out of Texas A&M. He may not be a super athlete, but he has poise and an ability to hit shots off the dribble. Another year or two of seasoning in Europe could bring a big jump in his effectiveness.

26.   Pete Mickeal, 6’7”, SG/SF, 1978, Team: Regal Barcelona (Spain), College: Cincinnati

The former Knicks draft pick is the type of veteran presence all Euroleague teams desire. A veteran of the “big European team” mentality, Mickael can score 25 one night, and be content playing a supportive role the next.

27.   Marcus Williams, 6’3”, PG, 1985, Team: Unicaja Malaga (Spain), College: Connecticut

Williams is one of the few players to go from China, a place where most players go to take a big paycheck before they ride into the sunset, to become an effective Euroleague point guard.

Dontaye Draper

28.   Dontaye Draper, 5’11”, PG/SG, 1984, Team: Real Madrid (Spain), College: Charleston

After leading Cedevita Zagreb into the Euroleague last season, Draper made the jump to one of Europe’s biggest teams. A very good athlete who is proficient off the dribble, Draper can be a big-time scorer once he adjusts to the Euroleague.

29.   Devin Smith, 6’5”, SG/SF, 1983, Team: Maccabi Tel-Aviv (Israel), College: Virginia

Smith is a very athletic wing player with lockdown defensive ability. His 3-point shooting and effectiveness in transition have made him a big time momentum changer.

30.   Nik Caner-Medley, 6’8”, SF/PF, 1983, Team: Maccabi Tel-Aviv (Israel), College: Maryland

Injuries have slowed Caner-Medley to start the season, but he has proven in his time in Spain to be a very effective floor spacer with his shot making ability. He doesn’t possess elite athleticism, but he does a great job spacing the floor and getting good rebounding position.

31.   Marcelus Kemp, 6’5”, SG/SF, 1984, Team: Montepaschi Siena (Italy), College: Nevada

After struggling with injuries last season, Kemp has regained his form as an all-around scorer.

32.   Alex Tyus, 6’9”, PF/C, 1988, Team: Cantu (Italy), College: Florida

Tyus has elite athleticism that allows him to play above the rim. After getting Israeli citizenship this past summer, and in the process of possibly getting an Italian passport, Tyus could be a monster in Europe for the next decade.

    • I second the Kerry Gold butter recommendation. From what I’ve read the cows in Ireland have to feed on pasture. It’s their law. Not sure if this is true, but Kerry Gold is very golden in color! We get it at Trader Joes or Market Basket because it’s only $2.99 for 1/2 a pound there whereas otr;e&nbsphmarkets are selling it for $4.99 for the 1/2 pound. YIKES!!!

  19. Kyle Hines is too low, Pete Mickeal, and David Moss are way too low. Armstrong is way too high….come on now. Kitchen has talent, but for mow he is way too high on the list also.

    Omar Cook and Blake Schilb are too low. I think you have Caner-Medley too high also. He’s good for mid-level ACB clubs, but this is another story when talking about best American players in Europe.

    Phil as for Panko being ACB MVP, so what? ACB is several levels lower than the Euroleague in terms of the level of competition. It’s very easy to be MVP in ACB and not be all that good at Euroleague level.

    Also, Batiste was probably the best American player in Europe at one time, but he’s pretty washed up now. Drew Nicholas also used to be on the better American players in Europe, but he’s pretty much done now. And there are some players on the list that have not even proven they are Euroleague level players yet.

    So I think the list is taking the past into too much consideration for some players, and is projecting the prospects of some others a bit too much.

      I’m sorry, but that’s simply not true. The ACB is only several paces behind, and probably closer to neck and neck. Here are the last ten ACB MVPs (All-Euroleague selections are in parentheses):

      2003: Walter Herrmann
      2004: Andres Nocioni (2)
      2005: Luis Scola (3)
      2006: Juan Carlos Navarro (6; Most all-time)
      2007: Luis Scola (3)
      2008: Marc Gasol
      2009: Felipe Reyes
      2010: Tiago Splitter (3)
      2011: Fernando San Emeterio (1)
      2012: Andy Panko

      There are 15 All-Euroleague selections among these nine players. The ones who haven’t gotten the nod:

      Marc Gasol: NBA starter, Spanish National Team fixture

      Felipe Reyes: World Champion in 2006, European champion in 2009 and 2011 with Spain, and the Euroleague’s sixth-leading rebounder since the turn of the century.

      And Walter Herrmann: Olympic Gold Medal in 2004 with Argentina, NBA All-Rookie Second Team with the Bobcats in ’07. Plus that hair.

      The ACB is legitimate.

      I agree, however, with your points on Nicholas and Batiste, though for very different reasons: Batiste is being forced to play the four now in Istanbul. As someone who’s familiar with Batiste’s history in Athens—it seems like you are—you’ll recall this is a departure from the norm for him. He’s not ‘washed up’ yet. Perhaps fading, but give him more than five games before you bury one of this decade’s finest.

      Nicholas, on the other hand, is out of work for the second time in two years (cut from Milano last year) for good reason.

      Veteran presences like his are overrated if the production is next-to-nothing. Still can play, but doesn’t belong on an EL contender.

        Nick, it’s not even remotely in the same ballpark. This isn’t an ACB forum full of Spanish homers. The reality is that the ACB is much further from the Euroleague in level than any distance between NBA and Euroleague.

        ACB isn’t even as good as the United League is, and in truth, these days Eurocup is much stronger than the ACB is.

They use the imagery of the Klan to compare the AKC’s appreciation of purebred dogs; they suggest to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream that human females be enlisted instead of cows in the manufacture of their ice-cream; they liken sluheaterhousgs to Nazi death camps. Clearly, they care more for animals than people. And, in PETA’s mind, if their analogies are f-ed up in their comparison to the plight of animals to human suffering, so what?
