Power forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis manages to steal the ball on a lazy entry pass by Raymond Felton and “takes off” for one of the slowest fast breaks you might see for the rest of the season. How the most routine layup ever became a “highlight play” is beyond me (maybe it was in there for a good laugh), but what’s even lamer is the fact that Carmelo Anthony, who everyone claims has a changed mentality on the defensive end, is somehow unable to catch up to Davis on the play. Anthony half-jogs and trails Davis the entire way, and it’s hard to believe that he couldn’t outrun the big man to get in front of him if he actually tried.
Of course, you generally can’t exert so much energy on the defensive end every time down, but it’s effort plays like this that has given Anthony a reputation of being a lazy defender throughout his career. He is trying to change the perception about his defensive effort – and has looked really good in doing so at times so far this season – but the reputation isn’t going to change any time soon if you’re going to get outrun by the likes of a 290-pound man trying to run the full length of the court.
