Mike D’Antoni’s coaching debut with the Los Angeles Lakers is on hold.
D’Antoni, recovering from knee replacement, is “day-to-day,” the Lakers say. Decision not to coach tonight was made about an hour ago.

I am sure this is devastating news to Berger, who may have to endure a couple more days of the tough life in Manhattan Beach — the site of one of the great expense report scam stories of all time. Berger was there to witness it.
A bunch of NBA reporters were at the Manhattan Beach Marriott lobby bar, and one of them had an idea for how to account for the hefty tab. Knowing that the NBA referees working the next night’s game were staying there, one of the sportswriters asked the bartender to send two beers up to a ref’s room in a bucket of ice.
The bartender complied, and the receipt was paid for by a major media conglomerate with the memo: “Dinner with Steve Javie.”
Anyway, that is your media tale of the night.
On to D’Antoni’.
