Sits and Starts
As predicted last week, my week 3 sits and starts didn’t work out so well. Evan Turner and Meyers Leonard edged out Tyreke Evans and DeAndre Jordan respectively but Brandon Jennings finished with the second place on the Yahoo! player rater, Brandan Wright lost his job and while Shannon Brown continued to score he didn’t do enough to outpoint the majority of the Spurs trio.
Week 4 though is looking much better as Kemba Walker‘s breakout continues, Matt Barnes is still putting up big lines at bargain prices and Andray Blatche is continuing to erode Kris Humphries‘ playing time.
Point Guard
Sit Jeremy Lin: If he couldn’t break-out in a blow-out against the Knicks, I don’t see how it will happen against Kyle Lowry, who will definitely be up for a game against his former team, Russell Westbrook and Mo Williams.
Start Jeremy Pargo: boy, it is tough to find a little-owned PG who may surprise. I don’t think Pargo will keep his pace but I do like 4 games and 18 for 33 on field goal attempts in two starts. An assist or free throw or two would be nice, though.
Shooting Guard
Sit O.J. Mayo: going out on a bit of a limb here as Mayo is having a break-out season but his 56.8 3p% is due for some major regression – his career mark is 36.8% and his rebounding and assist rates seem to be falling as well indicating that he may be falling in love with his jump-shot.
Start Dion Waiters: his shot comes and goes, but with Kyrie Irving out, he is now the best playmaker on the Cavs. He will get his 20 field goal attempts and 5 plus dimes will keep the ball in his hands.
Small Forward
Sit Michael Beasley: I don’t care if Phoenix has four games this week against poor opponents, Beasley’s indifferent play is turning his last supporter, Alvin Gentry, against him. He is likely to see a lot of pine.
Start Matt Barnes: I am riding the hot hand until his ownership rate climbs above 10%!
Power Forward
Sit Ersan Ilyasova: I’ll take the lay-up, I discussed him on page 2 and there is no peg to hang your hat on for a rebound.
Start Derrick Favors: he is getting consistent minutes and you gotta love the 2.2 blk and 1.3 stl. Some better luck on field goals and the scoring will rise. He is also a better match-up than Paul Millsap against the size and athleticism of Utah’s opposing power forwards this week (Kenneth Faried, Anthony Davis, Serge Ibaka and Patrick Patterson).
Center
Sit Jonas Valanciunas: a personal favorite who is steadily improving his game but his modest double-double streak came against weak opponents. Omer Asik, Marc Gasol and Marcin Gortat will take him to school and give him early foul trouble.
Start Darrell Arthur: This is a half-court shot. Memphis has a very easy schedule this week and has a great opportunity to work Arthur back in shape and finally rest Marc Gasol. Before he broke his leg, was averaging 9.1 points -4.2 reb – 0.8 blk and 0.7 stl in 20 minutes.
