J.A. Adande of ESPN’s Around the Horn fame, sent out the above tweet after news broke regarding forthcoming sanctions against the San Antonio Spurs. The reference is pretty humorous. Adande is essentially equating NBA Commissioner David Stern with Damon Wayans’ In Living Color character Homey D. Clown.
For Thursday’s marquee matchup between the Spurs and the Miami Heat, San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich sent Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green home for rest, rather than having them make the trip for the game at American Airlines Arena in Miami.
Thursday’s game would have been the sixth road game in eight days for the Spurs players. Instead, they will have two full days of rest before facing off against the Memphis Grizzlies at home on Saturday.
This methodology has been consistent for Popovich the past few years, particularly with Duncan and Ginobili, who are older. The idea of resting his stars to keep them healthy rather than risking injury seems like a safe bet. Coach Pop had this to say prior to the game:
