Turns out the sculpture really screwed with cell phone reception, and reporters had to go outside to use their mobile devices. Yes, they had a newsroom where phones did not work. (One more piece of Newsday legend, post-Tribune: On the afternoon when Sully guided that USAir jet safely onto the surface of the Hudson River, all of the heavy hitters at the paper were oblivious. They had been summoned to a meeting to be berated for the paper’s coverage of the lawsuit filed by the former personal assistant to Eddy Curry, which was particularly unflattering to both Curry and the Knicks — who were, after all, members of the Cablevision family (just like the Newsday employees), and the consigliere was particularly unhappy with he devaluation of this one particular asset, Curry.)
