- Awful news for Lou Williams and the Hawks, writes Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Lou Williams’ first season with the Hawks ended after just 39 games. Williams was lost with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a diagnosis made following an MRI exam Saturday afternoon. The Hawks guard suffered the injury against the Nets Friday. The Hawks’ third leading scorer will require surgery to repair the damaged knee at a to-be-determined date. The Hawks lost Williams with 7:12 remaining in the second quarter with an initial diagnosis of a right knee sprain pending further tests. Williams was driving to the basket and pulled up without contact as the knee buckled. He screamed out several times as he continued off the court without putting weight on his leg. After lying down in the entryway to the arena to be attended to by Hawks trainers, Williams was taken to the locker room in a wheelchair. An X-ray taken in Brooklyn was negative. Williams still could not put any weight on his leg following the game. He was helped to the training room by teammate Mike Scott when the locker room opened to the media post game. The MRI exam, done by Dr. Michael Bernot at Peachtree Orthopedics, showed the extent of the injury. While Williams is lost for the season, a more definitive timetable on his return will be released following surgery.”
- Carmelo Anthony has some pretty high praise for this year’s Knicks team, says Marc Berman of the New York Post: “Perhaps the perspective of being back where he won a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic team and seeing a key component return in Iman Shumpert underscored the point to Anthony. Anthony has not advanced out of the first round of the playoffs in two tries with the Knicks and has done so just once in his nine NBA seasons. ‘By far,’ Anthony said Thursday night in London when asked whether this is his strongest team. ‘I have been on good teams before. But as far as being a complete team from top to bottom, this is the best team I’ve been a part of.’ “

- Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com talked to former Sun Steve Nash about Alvin Gentry’s firing: “It has to say a lot about the Suns organization that Nash said it was a good thing for Gentry he was let go… ‘Obviously, I’m sad for Alvin (Gentry), but in some ways maybe this is a good thing for him,’ Lakers guard Steve Nash said after practice Friday. Nash was coached the last four years by Gentry, reaching the Western Conference Finals together against Los Angeles in 2010. ‘He’s a great coach, a really good coach and any club would be lucky to have him as a coach, that’s for sure. He’ll land on his feet for sure because he can really do a good job.’ “
- More on the Gentry situation comes from Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic, in the form of a quote from team president Lon Babby: “I don’t want to get into the details of evaluating what led to the decision. This is not something we planned for. As short as a month ago, Robert Sarver was direct and blunt in saying Alvin would be here for the rest of the year. That was our intent all along. That was a commitment that we had made. But sometimes in this business you get to a point where it just doesn’t feel right and we just reached that point. We met after the game last night. Robert, Alvin and I met long into the night and met again this morning and just felt like it was the right time for each of us to move on. How you get to that point is something that we look at closely and try to learn from but I don’t think it serves anybody’s purpose to share all of the details and all of the reason, either from his side or from our side.”

- Here’s what Joakim Noah had to say about Kevin Garnett after the Bulls edged the Celtics in Boston, via Mike Petraglia of WEEI.com: “Joakim Noah, who scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, got into several times in the second half with Garnett under the Bulls’ basket. Afterward, he claimed Garnett continued his strategy of throwing “elbows” and “cheap shots” at the Bulls big man. Noah and Garnett were called for double technicals with 2:20 left in a game that the Bulls led, 84-83. Garnett did not address it after the game but Noah did. ‘Just trying to throw elbows,’ Noah said. ‘Cheap shots, just trying to get you off your game. But he’s a vet, he’s been doing this a long time, but it’s all right.’ Noah was asked how he held Garnett to just 5-of-16 shooting from the field. ‘Just playing defense,’ Noah said. ‘Just playing sound defense, just contesting his shots. He’s a hell of a competitor. He’s always on some bulls***. Always on some bulls***.’ “
